Frequently Asked Questions
If you have any questions that aren't answered below, feel free to send us an email and we'll do our best to help you.
Can I leave bags with you before check in?
Yes! Check in is between 2pm-3pm, and if your ferry gets you in a tad earlier, you're welcome to leave your bags in our reception area or on our covered patio. We can put items in the fridge if you're checking in that same day.
Can I leave bags with you if I'm not checking in for a few days?
If we have space, we always aim to accommodate this. Pop by our reception and let us know your plans, and we'll do our best to fit your things in, but note it won't always be possible. We won't be able to keep any items in our fridges unless you're checking in that same day.
Can I use the facilities inside the Bunkhouse if I'm staying in a cabin or on the campsite?
Facilities inside the Bunkhouse are for those staying in the hostel only, and so you won't have access to the kitchen or bathrooms if you're staying in our cabins or campsite. We have plenty of amenities on the campsite for you to enjoy, including brand new composting toilets, an outdoor shower block, and a new covered cooking area, as well as bayside barbecues and washing up stations.
What is your refund policy?
We take a non-refundable deposit equal to the first night of your stay when you book in with us. That secures your booking in our diary and cannot be refunded. You are then welcome to make any changes to your booking, including moving dates or adding beds, all up to a month before you arrive. We take full payment 28 days prior to arrival, after which date your entire booking is non-refundable. In some circumstances, we can move your booking to another date, but please note this is not guaranteed, and we recommend guests take out travel insurance when booking with us. We can't offer refunds, including in the event of ferry cancellations or bad weather.
Are dogs allowed?
Dogs are allowed on our campsite and in our outdoor cabins, but the Bunkhouse does not allow dogs.
Can someone pick up my luggage from the pier?
Yes! We offer luggage pick-up and drop-off from the pier at £5pp. This must be booked in advance. More information here
Is there bike hire or kayak hire on the island?
Unfortunately there is no bike or kayak hire on the island. It's something we'd like to introduce in the future, but for now, we encourage guests to bring their own bikes (suitable for dirt track roads) if they'd like to cycle around the island.
How do I get to the Bunkhouse/campsite from the pier
We are just a ten minute walk from the pier. Follow the main road round and keep an eye out for our eagle logo, and you can't miss us
Do I need to bring food from the mainland?
We have a very well stocked village shop just ten minutes away from the island, and we always encourage people to shop local! It saves you the hassle of carrying shopping on the ferry, and supports the island's economy. The shop gets regular fresh fruit, veg and meat deliveries, and stocks plenty of dairy and cupboard products, as well as soft and alcoholic drinks and merchandise.
How bad are the midges?
You might have heard about the infamous Rum midges, and we won't lie to you, they can be pretty brutal. The village shop supplies plenty of anti-midge gear including head nets and sprays, and all the bedroom windows in the Bunkhouse and outdoor cabins come fitted with industrial strength midge nets. We find that if you keep moving, it helps!
Is there a cafe on the island?
We don't have a cafe on the island, however the village shop serves delicious Glen Lyon coffee, as well as hot soup, fries and pre-packaged sandwiches.

Can I check in early/late?
If your room is ready early, we'll always get in touch and let you know that you can come by before check in and get settled. If you think you'll reach the Bunkhouse after our 2pm-3pm check in time, just let us know in advance and give us a rough 1 hour window so that a member of the team can be on site to check you in. We only have one full time member of staff, and so can't be on reception 24/7.
There's no one on reception. How do I contact you?
We tend to be on reception most days, but sometimes our work takes us away from the front desk. We are very responsive on emails, and the best way to get in touch with us is to email on either bookings@rumbunkhouse.com or info@rumbunkhouse.com.
I left something on a recent stay - can you post it to me?
If you've left something, we'll try our best to get it back out to you. Email us at info@rumbunkhouse.com and describe in detail what you believe has been left, and we'll have a thorough look. Please note that it'll take longer to reach you due to island post office hours and ferry schedules.
