Everything you need to know before coming to Rum

Getting to Rum Bunkhouse/campsite
We're just a short walk away from the ferry pier. Follow the road for around 5-10 minutes and you'll come across our facility. Pop into reception and our team will show you to your room/pod/pitch. If you are here early, you can leave your bags in our reception to pick up later. Book luggage transfer by emailing us here.
Shopping/groceries
We have a very well stocked village shop on the island, and so there's no need to carry a million things with you on the boat! The village shop has fresh fruit, veg, meat and dairy products, as well as cupboard staples, alcoholic and soft drinks, snacks and cereals. They also stock items like midge nets and sprays, toiletries, medication and tobacco products, and serve delicious takeaway coffee, soup and chips.
You can pre-order items from the shop - and for larger orders, have them delivered to the Bunkhouse on the day you arrive. Contact Stuart and Jennifer directly on info@wildinthewilderness.co.uk.
Our cancellation policy
We live on a beautiful Scottish island, and it does mean the weather can be unpredictable. Please take a moment to familiarise yourself with our cancellation policy - when you booked, we took a deposit equal to the first night of your stay. This is non-refundable. We take payment 28 days before your booking. If you cancel your booking after that, we unfortunately cannot refund you or make changes to your booking. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance, as they can help in the event a ferry is cancelled due to weather/technical issues.
Bunkhouse bookings
If you've booked to stay in our Bunkhouse, these notes are for you!

Check In/Out
Check-in is between 2 PM - 3 PM. If you arrive early, please feel free to leave your bags in our reception area, but please note that you won’t be able to access the Bunkhouse until check-in time. There are plenty of gorgeous short walks accessible from the Bunkhouse, and the local shop sells hot soup and delicious coffee!
Check-out is before 10 AM; there’s no need for a formal check-out, just strip your beds and pop the linen in the hallway basket.
Our facilities
You'll have access to two large kitchens, and a fridge with designated food boxes labelled with your name. You can make use of our cosy lounge, complete with log burner, dinner benches, and sofas with breath-taking views - and a few sets of binoculars for keen bird-watchers. You'll also be able to use our drying room to dry out your clothes after a day of hiking! Rooms in the Bunkhouse don't have plug sockets - they have reading lights and USB charger ports. This is because of our commitment to low energy use. You'll be able to use plugs in the main common areas for things like laptops, but we ask that you keep your energy consumption low if possible!
What to bring
We aim to have everything you'll need, but there are some things we'd advise you bring with you.
- Towel
- Indoor shoes (our Bunkhouse is shoes-off)
- USB phone charger
Camping pods
Are you staying in our camping pods, Hallival and Askival? Here's everything you need to know.

Check In/Out
Check-in is between 2 PM - 3 PM. If you arrive early, please feel free to leave your bags in our reception area or at the shelter situated on the campsite. There are plenty of gorgeous short walks, and the local shop sells hot soup and delicious coffee! When it's time to check in, pop over to the Bunkhouse reception and a member of our team will show you to your cabin.
Check-out is before 10 AM; there’s no need for a formal check-out, but we would appreciate a note in our guest book!
Our facilities
Each cabin has 4 single mattresses, 2 plug sockets, 2 USB chargers, a plug in heater and an electric kettle. You can also access the communal BBQ on the campsite, and make use of our outdoor showers (Code: C2406X) and toilets. And there's WiFi if you need to stay in touch with the outside world!
Please note, if you're staying in our cabins, you won't have access to the Bunkhouse. If you'd like to use the drying room, speak to a member of staff.
What to bring
This is just like camping - bring equipment to cook with and things to sleep in (or hire bedding packs by sending us an email).
Isle of Rum Campsite
Are you pitching up on our campsite? Here's everything you need to know.

Check In/Out
Pop over to the Rum Bunkhouse reception to check in. You should be able to pitch up as soon as you get off the ferry - our team will give you the rundown of our facilities and where best to pitch your tent.
Our facilities
Facilities at the site include two communal barbecues (charcoal not included) and an indoor shelter for birdwatching or sheltering from the weather. There are also two showers, two sinks by the sea and access to a hot-water tap. We have a set of new composting toilets right next to the campsite - plumbed loos are located next to the outdoor hot showers.
Please note, if you're staying on the campsite, you won't have access to the Bunkhouse. If you'd like to use the drying room, speak to a member of staff.
What to bring
This is just like camping! Make sure you bring something to sleep in - either a sleeping bag or something similar. You'll have a mattress, but covers/pillows are up to you. Towels aren't provided and so make sure you bring your own!
